Panel Planning

How to Plan a Comic Issue Scene by Scene

Structure scenes as panels, page turns, action beats, reveals, and cliffhangers.

Comic pacing is visual. A scene needs panels that change the reader viewpoint, reveal information, and make each turn feel intentional.

Use panel jobs

  • Establish the location.
  • Show the danger.
  • Reveal the choice.
  • Pay off the action.
  • End with a question or twist.

Let silence work

Not every panel needs dialogue. A reaction, shadow, broken object, or citywide view can carry the emotional beat.
